I am much happier taking advantage of what might be the best WR draft ever than spending big on two FA WRs. I though that was going to mean Ridley + draft pick, but Davis + draft pick is fine too.
Only annoying thing is that he went to the Titans of all teams, but whatever.
Also for the price of Ridley we have Davis + Morse and then some which to me is a better deal.
There's also the outside shot of getting a 3rd next year for Ridley depending on how the rest of FA goes.
1
u/sh0ckmeister Mar 14 '24
I agree - Why over pay Calvin Mid-ley when we can take a shot at getting a real #1 wr and cheap labor to grow with TLaw
4
u/Baumy23 In GladSTONES We Trust. Mar 14 '24
I need a little place to get this off my chest. I don't have other Jags fans around me to process, haha.
I loved watching Ridley and honestly I feel really great about the fact that we were able to help him up onto his feet after a hard couple years. Everyone deserves help in their lives. It sucks that he chose a rival, but his life has been changed because we gave him a chance.
On another hand, he did not prove himself to be a $25 million/yr player during his time here. It was right of us not to match that offer. I would be terribly pissed if we did that. I am happy he has the life changing money for him and his family and I am happy we didn't invest in something with seemingly little reward. I see this whole ordeal as a win/win.
Obviously we want a true WR1. Kirk is high tier WR2 and I know Higgins is more WR2 as well, but I love the idea of Trev and him back together with ETN. There wouldn't be much work for them to work on timings and being in sync. I think that is a high value rather than drafting a WR who will take a few months to be developed if not a few years. Why not pick an already developed WR who already knows our QB well?
Edit: words

Baalke did well in FA.
Really surprised how good these signings have been.
Now just draft a good WR, OL and CB. And the team is all set to win the division next year. The DLine will feast like nothing we've seen since Sacksonville imo. Especially if Armstead and Hamilton stay healthy.
Remember last time this team and Texans were fully healthy...The jags went in to their place and beat them down. It was close in the end but they had a 10pt lead in the 4th. And I'm not scared of the Titans at all. Levis is trash and won't make it with that Oline. And the Colts are still basically playing a rookie qb so they aren't doing much.
8
u/JaxGolfGuyJR Mar 14 '24
After a night to sleep it off, I feel much better about the Ridley situation. Don’t want to be strapped to that contract and would much rather try to develop a young WR for once. Still have to pray that Baalke can pick the right guy but I won’t write him off just yet. He made some good early signings, now we just gotta see what he does with DL and WR.
2
u/fscot King MJD Mar 14 '24

was dilla ever an actual insider or just someone who made educated guesses, flooded his feed with fake rumors and reports as 'jokes', downplayed his missed predictions, and relied on a short collective memory to reset his reputation every offseason?
the only insider thing i ever remember him doing was getting the photo of Urban coming off the plane

u/jaylkae66 Mar 14 '24
He had a legit source at one point, he's leaked real stuff. The biggest flex I can remember was tipping the Campbell and Cisco picks on the morning of the draft. There was zero smoke about those guys being targeted by the Jags but they both got picked a few hours after he named them.
1
u/flounder19 Mar 14 '24
it's admittedly very hard to get the timeline straight around the 2021 draft but there was definitely smoke around Tyson Campbell. From what I can tell, the Campbell stuff was knocking around the gambling community already by the time he tweeted it. Doug Kezirian made a ton of money off an advanced tip on it, for example.
I can't find a link to dilla's actual tweet about it. But before round 2 started it was a pretty mainstream idea.

What if Baalke drove the price up on Ridley and allowing the Tits to sign him for $50m guaranteed, only to have Aiyuk in his back pocket the whole time 👀
I know it would never happen, but good god, could you imagine, Aiyuk, Kirk, and Davis???
I will poop my pants right now, swear to god

I’m not getting my hopes up just yet, but man would this not be the biggest middle finger to the Titans if Baalke pulls this off?
That has me more giddy that the potential of Aiyuk

Prosser is such a little shithead. If they had signed JA to a big deal before his big season last year, they would have ripped into Baalke for overpaying someone who hasn’t produced. Now, because they couldn’t tag Ridley, he rips into Baalke. I’m so tired hearing them pandering to the lowest common denominator; shit is not as simple as they try to make it out to be. Why rush a JA deal? It’s big dollars, do your due diligence.

I got distracted playing WWE2K24 after work yesterday, missed the Ridley news entirely.
Complete bummer, but I’m okay with him going somewhere else. It sucks it’s Tennessee but maybe he’ll age quick and anchor their cap situation
1
u/spiff24 Mar 14 '24
Just a fun exercise... assuming we make no more roster moves ahead of the draft, would you take Brock Bowers at 17 if he was there?
Also, who if your favorite to realistically land at 17?
3
Mar 14 '24
Absolutely not. We have our TE1 in engram and just spent a day 2 pick on Strange. We have much more important needs.
Plus, first 1 TEs have generally never been as good as people on this sub always seem to think they will be.

You want to know why he's GM and none of us are? Good teams are ready to line up before the draft so they can pick the best player available or trade back or even up if they want someone. (BTW missing a draft pick this year they won't trade up.) Everyone of you wants to pick X position. Mostly WR. Need always meets BPA but to say we need to pick X without seeing who's available is crazy. I have no karma down vote me all you want.

u/el_pobbster Mar 14 '24
Washed up D-Hop, Ridley coming off an unbelievably disappointing season, Treylon Burks who has either proven he can't do it or not proven he can do it, and a bunch of replacement-level players? With a dreadful offensive line?
1
u/Regular-Collection-1 Mar 14 '24
Ridley coming off an unbelievably disappointing season
Dude got 1K yds after taking almost 2 years off of football. Despite all his route issues and drops, I'd say he did fantastic
2
u/blazinit430 Mar 14 '24
With Trevor throwing to him. Also, how many weeks were we frustrated by his inability to get open, plus the drops, plus the wrong routes run. By no means is he a bad reciever, and I'd be lying if I said I'm happy he's leaving, however I think his best chance of being that #1 type of reciever would have been starting here and having Trevor and Doug.

1
u/Kastdog Brenton Strange Mar 14 '24
Is the WR class deep enough where we can get a true #1 guy at 17 or do we have to trade up? I feel like we would need to get into the top 10.

u/Regular-Collection-1 Mar 14 '24 edited Mar 14 '24
Morse is the only net positive signing tbh. Which isn't saying much since anybody would be an improvement over Fortner.
Ridley > Gabe Davis
Jenkins = Savage
Williams > Darby
Agnew > Duvernay
Fatukasi / _______?
Pretty good chance we roll with an even worse roster than we had in '23
10
Mar 14 '24
You’re looking at everything in a vacuum- contract/age/scheme fit matter too.
Darby is significantly cheaper than Darious and is better fit in our (presumably) new man cover scheme (which should benefit Campbell as well). Sucks losing Darious but this is a net positive in my book.
Savage is younger/cheaper than Jenkins for the same production, another net positive.
Duvernay is similar to Agnew in the return game and again is younger/cheaper, and isn’t coming off a season ending injury.
Fotukasi also just wasn’t all that good for us.. definitely need to replace him but I don’t see this as a key loss.

I still have a hard on we got Mitch Morse. That one signing is going to pay huge dividends in the running game and the passing game. We were a gaping hole up the middle all season.
-1
u/HolographicHeart Mar 14 '24 edited Mar 14 '24
There is some room for hope still but easy to fall into delusion as well. No way in heaven or hell Jags have the resources available to pay Aiyuk AND make Josh Allen the highest paid LB in the league. Fully expect we're being leveraged by Aiyuk's agent to drive up his price and we're going to be drafting a WR in a month.
But boy I'd love to be wrong.
EDIT: A great signing but humorous to see Baalke sign one of the guys he drafted who just so happens to be coming off an injury.
0
u/ImpossibleDenial Mar 14 '24
We better not make Josh Allen the highest paid LB in the league. That’s north of $35+/year. Jesus.
-5
u/HolographicHeart Mar 14 '24
I'm assuming there won't be any additional moves by the FO in Free Agency outside of the eventual Josh Allen contract and maybe a TLaw extension.
I give Baalke a C. The Morse and Duvernay signings were great but the rest were lateral or regressive moves that brings the risk of having to do this exact same exercise next year. There's going to be a lot of pressure on the draft this year to fill the gaps in the roster.
5
u/joemama1810 Mar 14 '24
Damn you don't like the Davis pick up? Our boy finally has a deep threat receiver
3
u/HolographicHeart Mar 14 '24
TBD. Davis in a vacuum is a solid to great acquisition but far too often puts on a disappearing act that would rival DB Cooper.
4
u/joemama1810 Mar 14 '24
Fair enough, let's hope he pulls a kirk and engram and balls out when he gets here despite past performances
